[Review] The Long Way

Author: Aaron Refern

Publish Date: May 19, 2023 by BookRix, 165 pages

Rating: 4/5

Series: Book #1

Genre: Fantasy, YA

When I read the summary for The Long Way I got really excited. It's described as a "darkly whimsical retelling of the Tolkien saga." Most people don't know it, but I'm a huge LOTR (Lord of the Rings) and Tolkien fan.

Right from the get-go it reminds me of the way Tolkien writes in The Hobbit. Granted, it's been a quite a few years since I've read it. The great thing about this book and Redfern's writing is that it's written in modern language whereas sometimes Tolkien's older language could be hard to follow.

We start off with Scoff who works away on his family farm. One day a wizard comes along to trade a shiny emerald ring for some work from Scoff. After the deal is done Scoff uses the ring to propose to his love Clara.

After many years of marriage and one son (Spiff) later, the wizard shows up again asking for his ring back. Scoff and Clara send Spiff to return the ring and so our adventure begins.
Spiff will have to cross all kinds of terrain and meet many people as he searches to recover the ring after it was stolen from him.

This is part one of a longer series and The Long Way is a quick 165 page read. It's great for younger readers or someone looking for an easy and fast read. It's also perfect for those who love epic fantasies, wizards, magic and mythical creatures.

I dub this book a solid 4 out of 5 for fantastic writing and for being a perfectly fun read. Book two is titled The Forgotten Way and also is available on amazon.
